Statement
My practice is a constellation of swirling images that intertwine stories of my kin and being a Quarter-Rican Florida girl living in the US South. Discovering the allegories of cultural expectations, historical revelations and vivid dreams; I found the crossroad of escape, myth and memory. These stories are layered with the experiences of my family from moving around to escape tradition, the conversations of myth between friends and bittersweet memory of childhood nostalgia. Tradition from having roots in small conservative towns and leaving to find ourselves. Myths from different cultural backgrounds and finding common links in creative communities. Then having nostalgia for the times before growing up, missing the activities we enjoyed and the places that we once brightly colored are now neutrally utilitarian. What I make in the studio connects these entities through dreaming bodies, found objects and colorful motifs. Working with bookmaking, painting and mobile installations, my goal is to create gravity-less realms that elude the traditional figure, platform simple artifacts and distort the horizon line. These colorful characters tumble together in imaginary spaces as they are in motion of swimming, sleeping and floating. These memories are turned into illustrative scenes of outlines, layered color and repeating forms as I meet people, find beauty in the little things and feel the fast wind.
